The faculty and students who make up the Department of American Studies combine interests drawn from a variety of perspectives and methods of inquiry: history, folklife, cultural studies, literary analysis, and political theory, as well as the study of art, architecture, performance, and visual culture. Students at all levels develop individualized, interdisciplinary programs of study in consultation with faculty advisors.

Teresa Murphy wins Trachtenberg Prize for University Service

Congratulations to Professor Teresa Murphy, one of two university-wide recipients of the Oscar and Shoshana Trachtenberg Prize for University Service! The prize is presented annually to a tenured member of the faculty to recognize exceptional service to The George Washington University.

Ramzi Fawaz Wins Philip Amsterdam Graduate Teaching Assistant Award

Congratulations to PhD student Ramzi Fawaz, one of three university-wide recipients of the 2011 Philip Amsterdam Graduate Teaching Assistant Award! The award is given to honor individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to GW teaching and to recognize the important contribution graduate students make to the educational process.
