Do I need to take a placement exam?
If you want to be placed into any class above the introductory level (002 and above), you need to take a placement test.
Where can I take a placement exam?
You can take the placement exam on line. Go to the exam page using the link to the left.
What is the difference between the placement exam and the diagnostic exam?
The placement exam is for anyone wanting to take a non-introductory language course offered by the department. The diagnostic exam is for in-coming graduate students in Elliot School, who need to be informed of what preparation they need to make in order to pass the exit examination.
Can I cross-register between different sections of multi-section courses?
For all Chinese language classes, you may register only for the drill section that is linked to the lecture section of a given course. For lower-level Japanese classes, you can select one lecture section and one drill section to fit your schedule.
Can I be signed into a class by an instructor if it is closed according to the GWeb system?
Some students might drop the course in the next couple of weeks. Check the system frequently. In limited cases, an instructor may sign you in even if the system says the class is closed, provided that there is physical room to do so and that it is pedagogically sound. However, an instructor cannot override the room cap under any circumstance, nor is he/she at liberty to move the class somewhere else.
Can I be placed on a waiting list for the class I want to take?
No, please keep checking the Banner system.
Can I audit a class if it is closed?
No. Only officially registered students can sit in a class. "Auditors" must also be officially registered.
How can I check toward which general curriculum requirement the EALL course I am taking counts?
You can check the list using the link CCAS GCR to the left.
I want to study abroad. What should I do?
You must visit the Study Abroad Office. Make sure you fill out the NEW course approval form BEFORE you leave for your study abroad.
I am a GW student but I am not registered for any of the EALL classes. Can I be tested and certified for my proficiency level?
Yes, but there will be a charge for this special service. Please inquire with the Dept office at 1-202-994-7106 for detail.

I need a tutor. Where can I find one?
Go to the Language Center homepage. They have tutors in various languages. They also arrange for language exchange. You can also post flyers on the bulletin board in the department.
How can I transfer credits from a Study Abroad program?

Are there any language-related internship opportunities in DC?
The Japan Culture and Information Center (the cultural division of the Embassy of Japan) offers a few internship positions. The deadline for application is sometime in September.
I am an alumnus. What EALL courses can I take as an alumni auditor?
