Facilities & Resources

The department is located in two adjoining buildings: Monroe Hall and the Hall of Government. These buildings became home to the Department in the fall of 2007 after an extensive renovation. Monroe Hall and the Hall of Government, which originally were built in 1951 and 1938 respectively, overlook Kogan Plaza in the heart of campus.

Several key academic and administrative buildings are located within a block of our buildings. Gelman Library, the University's main library, is a short walk across Kogan Plaza. Also nearby is the Marvin Center, which houses the student center with bookstore, meeting rooms, eateries, and parking. The Academic Center, where the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences is based, is located across H Street from Gelman Library. Lisner Auditorium, the site of musical, dance, and cultural events, is another Kogan Plaza neighbor.

Research at GW & the Washington, D.C. Area

The Washington area possesses a wealth of scholarly resources that faculty and students use in their research. George Washington University hosts the National Security Archive, which houses declassified documents and government records on a wide range of topics pertaining to the national security, foreign, intelligence, and economic policies. The National Archives contains information used by congressional scholars and national security experts. The Library of Congress' Manuscript Division is the repository for an extensive collection of private papers, including those of many retired Supreme Court justices, which have been mined by our judicial scholars. Many international and non-governmental organization archives are located in Washington, such as those of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, which are adjacent to campus.
