Background
Kerry Crawford is a Ph.D. candidate (ABD) in the Department of Political Science writing a dissertation on the ways in which states, international organizations, and non-governmental organizations respond to rape, sexual slavery, forced prostitution, exploitation, and other forms of sexual violence in war. The project, entitled "Punctuated Silence: Variation in the International Response to Wartime Sexual Violence", looks at the development of an international prohibition of wartime sexual violence and aims to explain the international community’s inconsistent response to wartime sexual violence in the past two decades.
In addition to her dissertation, Kerry has an ongoing project on women in peacekeeping and the ways in which the United Nations can promote greater gender equality (and mitigate the perverse consequences of all-male peacekeeping forces) through the provision of incentives to troop-contributing countries. An article Kerry co-authored with colleague Julia Macdonald is forthcoming in Air and Space Power Journal in Summer 2013. In addition, Kerry is co-authoring a second journal article on this topic.
Kerry has been a Teaching Assistant for introductory seminars in International Relations and American Politics at GWU. She has also worked as a research assistant on several faculty projects. In Summer 2012, Kerry taught PSC 2990.22—Gender, War, and Peace. Kerry holds a predoctoral fellowship from the Global Gender Program at the Elliott School of International Affairs for the 2012-2013 academic year.
In addition to coursework and training at GWU, Kerry has received methodological training from the Institute for Qualitative and Multi-Method Research (June 2010) and attended the Journeys in International Politics workshop (November 2011). She has presented her research and working papers during American Political Science Association (2010, 2011, 2012) and International Studies Association (2013) conferences and various workshops in the Washington, DC area.
Before attending graduate school at GWU, Kerry worked in the grants and contracts department of the International Youth Foundation, an international non-profit organization that assists youth organizations abroad with health, education, and employability projects.
Kerry wrote an undergraduate thesis at St. Mary's College on gender bias in China and India entitled "The Disappearing Female" and presented her research at professional and
undergraduate political science conferences in 2006 and 2007.
