If you are a native French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian or Spanish speaker you are eligible to test out of college language requirements. Please contact the office for more information at rgsll@gwu.edu.
Here at RGSLL we do our best to accommodate as many students as possible into our language, literature, and culture courses. However, there will invariably be students every semester - particularly freshmen and sophomores - who discover that the courses they need are full.
For French courses levels 1001-2006 and all Spanish courses, we are using an online waitlist. You can sign up for the waitlist through GWeb. This system is a little confusing, so it is very important that you click here to read the instructions for using these waitlists.
For all other courses, please e-mail the department to inquire.
Please be advised that faculty are not available for advising during the winter and summer holidays for any of our language programs. Advising will resume at the start of the spring and fall semesters respectively.
Thinking about learning a new language? If you have never taken one of our language courses at GW, odds are you will need to take our placement exam to find out which course you need to take. For complete information on how to register for the placement exam, click here.
If you are in the Elliott School of International Affairs, you have the option of taking a waiver exam to fulfill your language proficiency requirement. Waiver exams for French and Spanish are offered once each semester. The next waiver exam for these languages will be offered in March 2013. You must register in advance to take the waiver exam by e-mailing the department.
Waiver exams in German, Italian, Portuguese, and Russian are offered on an as needed basis throughout the semester. To register for the German exam, please contact Margaret Gonglewski. To register for the Italian and Portuguese exams, please contact the department. To register for the Russian exam, please contact Richard Robin.
NOTE: Our waiver exams are designed specifically to determine 3rd-year proficiency for students in the Elliott School. They can not be used for waiving foreign language requirements in other schools.
