B.A. in Spanish & Latin American Languages, Literatures & Cultures
The requirements for the major in Spanish and Latin American Language and Literatures are as follows:
For students who declared before Fall 2011:
- The general requirements stated under Columbian College of Arts and Sciences.
- Prerequisite courses – Span 1001, 1002, 1003, 1004, 2005, 2006, 3100, or equivalent.
- 30 credit hours consisting of Span 3210 and 3220; six 3000-4000 level courses in Spanish, with at least four in literature, distributed as indicated immediately below; and, in the senior year, Span 198-199 and a comprehensive examination. The six 3000-4000 level courses must include two in literature before 1800, two in literature since 1800, and two chosen from among all 3000-4000 level courses.
For students who declared on or after Fall 2011:
- The general requirements stated under Columbian College of Arts and Sciences.
- Prerequisite courses – Span 1001, 1002 (or 1012), 1003, 1004 (or 1034), 2005, 2006, 3100 or equivalents.
- 36 credit hours consisting of 3210 and 3220; eight 3000-4000-level courses in Spanish and Latin American literature, distributed as indicated immediately below; and, in the senior year, Span 4910-49. The eight 3000-4000-level courses must include two in literature before 1800, two in literature since 1800, and four chosen from among all 3000-4000-level courses. Additionally, up to two 3000-4000-level courses may be taken from outside the program, with the approval of the advisor. No more than four courses taken abroad or at another institution may count toward the Major (excluding GW Study Centers in Argentina, Chile, and Spain).
