Academics

Located just blocks from the White House, the Smithsonian Institute, the Kennedy Center, and other landmarks, GW offers a rich laboratory in which students may acquire and develop new skills in sociological observation, analysis, and service. The wide array of government agencies, lobbying organizations, not-for-profit organizations, and think tanks headquartered in our nation’s capital provides a range of internship, service learning, and job opportunities.

The Department of Sociology offers three undergraduate majors and minors, two master's degree programs, and three five-year BA/MA degree programs. While the department does not offer a PhD, it is affiliated with the Trachtenberg School of Public Policy and Public Administration, which offers PhDs in Race, Ethnicity, and Public Policy and Gender and Social Policy, and other public policy and administrative fields.

Meet a Professor: Daina Eglitis

Prof. Daina Eglitis recently served as an International Scholar with the Department of Applied Sociology at Yerevan State University in Armenia. Because of the militarization of the society and the post-Soviet gap in the sex ratio at birth there, Prof. Eglitis says, "The preparation of committed and critical scholars who can turn a sociological lens on contemporary social issues in Armenia is of real importance."  She writes about her experience in this recent ASA Footnotes article.
